Dr. Edward Nemeth is a consultant to the biopharmaceutical industry and to academic consortiums focused on drug discovery and development. He discovered the parathyroid calcium receptor in 1986 while an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Case Western Reserve University. In 1990 he joined NPS Pharmaceuticals where he established a calcium receptor drug discovery program. He coined the terms calcimimetic and calcilytic to describe activators and inhibitors of the calcium receptor, respectively, and is an inventor of cinacalcet, the first allosteric modulator of a G protein-coupled receptor to become a drug. He is currently involved in the development of the first calcilytic for treating hypoparathyroidism and a new calcimimetic for treating secondary hyperparathyroidism in kidney dialysis patients.
Dr. Nemeth received a B.A. in chemistry and psychology from Lawrence University, a M.A. in psychology from Princeton University, and M.Phil., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in pharmacology from Yale University.
