The discovery of the novel CREBRF variant unique to people of Māori or Pacific ancestry, challenges the traditional paradigm linking obesity to type 2 diabetes due to its paradoxical association with higher BMI, taller height, but lower risk of type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes.  This presentation will review evidence from our New Zealand genetic, physiological and clinical studies showing that CREBRF influences insulin secretion, body composition and gestational diabetes, providing insights into mechanisms of metabolic resilience despite higher body mass.
